Community

Morning everyone. I am proud to report that Stone Soup DC now gets around 150-200 hits a day. Very cool.

I am glad people are finding the information useful, at least I hope you are. I believe one of the best resources anywhere and anytime, is community. We can make this resource so much more powerful if we pull together our information and ideas. Anything from what’s on sale this week, to a great store you’ve found, to free/cheap community events, to how to make something yourself that you would have previously purchased. That’s what we all want to hear. I am sure each one of you has ideas to add. Please consider joining the Yahoo discussion group, posting a comment on the blog, or even sending me an email at stonesoupdc@gmail.com. I want to hear from you!

Have you all heard the story of Stone Soup? I’ve added some stones. Anyone out there have some cabbage or carrots or an onion?

Screen on the Green

Posted in Activities, Entertainment, Freebies, Kids, Movies by jboyko on the July 17, 2006

If you can stand the heat, the annual Screen on the Green festival begins this week bringing free movies to the National Mall. Grab your picnic blanket or lawn chairs and pick a spot between Fourth and Seventh Street where a 20×40 foot screen will be set up. Movies will be shown each Monday evening at dusk (between 8:30 and 9pm) for the next five weeks. Apparently, people begin to arrive several hours early to grab good seats, so plan accordingly.

July 17: “The Day the Earth Stood Still” (1951)
July 24: “The Band Wagon” (1953)
July 31: “Bullitt” (1968)
Aug. 7: “To Have and Have Not” (1944)

AFI and The Great Muppet Caper

Posted in Activities, Entertainment, Kids, Movies by jboyko on the July 14, 2006

The AFI Theater in Silver Spring has some great classic movies this month (I know, they always do). This weekend they are showing The Great Muppet Caper, and there are several other Jim Henson movies lined up this month. Also, My Fair Lady, Singin’ in the Rain, and Breakfast at Tiffany’s are playing as well as Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. If those are too tame for you, Jaws is back this coming week. Lots of classic family entertainment opportunities. Check out their schedule.

(Herndon/Fairfax) Free Movies and Activities for Kids

Posted in Activities, Entertainment, Freebies, Kids, Movies, Music by jboyko on the June 20, 2006

From Christine:

When I saw the post about the Majestic in Silver Spring, two similar "freebies" closer to my neck of the woods leapt to mind:

The movie theater at Worldgate in Herndon has kids' summer movies for free on Tues & Wed mornings. (Click on "free summer movies" under Worldgate 9 for the schedule: http://www.phoenixtheatres.com/theatres.htm)

Fairfax Corner has summer tots entertainment programs every 2nd and 4th Wednesday, also free, at the Fountain Plaza, as well as free movies on Wed. mornings for kids 6 and older who can show a book report (accompanying grown-ups and little ones are free). http://www.fairfaxcorner.com/events.shtml
