Stargazing Activities

Posted in Activities, Entertainment, Kids, Parks by jboyko on the September 12, 2006

A friend sent me this info about some local astronomy activites that sound like fun:

Rock Creek Park Planetarium, located in the Rock Creek Nature Center near the intersection of Military and Glover Roads in Rock creek park in DC. Shows are free, get ticket at Nature center. Seats about 75 but they prefer to only have about 50 or so. When my husband went last week (early session on Saturday) there were only about 25 people there. Show lasts about 45 minutes and has some audience participation. Free tickets can be picked up at the information desk in the Nature Center.

Afterschool Planetarium show: “Young Planetarium” Wednesday 4:00 PM

Shows Saturday and Sunday 1:00 PM for kids age 4-7 (need adult with them).

Advanced Planetarium Show: Saturday and Sunday 4:00 PM for kids age 7 and over.

Also, Evening stargazing sessions (held at Military Field, off of Military Road), are run in conjunction with the National Capital Astronomers and are held monthly, April through November, once a month on Saturday night. Next few sessions:

9/30 8:00 PM Autumn equinox; Rock Creek Park Day
10/21 7:30 PM Orionoid meteor shower peak

11/4 7:00 PM Moon (in Aries) near full;Pleiades

Parks and Playgrounds

Okay, so my husband tells me my post yesterday was the most boring, yet. His drive for swim diapers and Leapster cartridges is low. But they were pretty good deals!

It’s such a beautiful day, I thought I’d link to the Our Kids site listing of parks and playgrounds. A picnic lunch and a day at the park sounds like the perfect frugal afternoon. It’s just too nice to sit inside today!

Carrot

I am dangling a carrot:

I have upload a file to the “Files” section of the Stone Soup DC Yahoo group with around 50 ideas for things to do with kids in the DC Area. Since I am in Silver Spring, Maryland, you will find that area of the region favored, but I am more than happy to add any ideas you have for other activites throughout the region. Just post a message to the list!

While many of the activites are free, some have entrance fees. Links are provided so you can investigate entrance requirements.

Join the Yahoo group, check out the “Files” section, and enjoy!

Community

Morning everyone. I am proud to report that Stone Soup DC now gets around 150-200 hits a day. Very cool.

I am glad people are finding the information useful, at least I hope you are. I believe one of the best resources anywhere and anytime, is community. We can make this resource so much more powerful if we pull together our information and ideas. Anything from what’s on sale this week, to a great store you’ve found, to free/cheap community events, to how to make something yourself that you would have previously purchased. That’s what we all want to hear. I am sure each one of you has ideas to add. Please consider joining the Yahoo discussion group, posting a comment on the blog, or even sending me an email at stonesoupdc@gmail.com. I want to hear from you!

Have you all heard the story of Stone Soup? I’ve added some stones. Anyone out there have some cabbage or carrots or an onion?

Seneca Creek State Park

Posted in Activities, Kids, Parks by jboyko on the July 25, 2006

From another Stone Soup DC Yahoo member:

This weekend we went to a BBQ up in Seneca Creek State Park in
Gaithersburg – one of those places that’s been on my “to do” list for
a while. I’m so glad we finally went! There was a $2 admission fee
for the grownups and babies (“in carseats”) were free. There are
several pavillions that can be reserved for parties (from
$50-$280/day, depending on capacity), plus a big lake with paddleboat
and canoe rentals (or you can bring your own), and of course hiking
and biking trails. Apparently there are also historic buildings from
when Germantown was first settled. And I think it’s where The Blair
Witch Project was filmed too!
